NARROWBOAT Lock Mystery SOLVED! Life On The Oxford Canal Ep 89
A bit of culture, a dunking in the canal and a fallen tree! We had questions taking our narrowboat through Hillmorton Locks in Rugby and found some answers to the apparent random words on the lock gates. Join us on narrowboat One Day More as we head north through Rugby on the Oxford Canal.

    Oh my, your. vIdeo brought back memories.We bought our new boat from Staffordshire and cruised via the canals to Northamptonshire.We spent a week at Braunston getting a few repairs done by the boat yard. This was nearly 40 years ago…we had lots of adventures on the way.Nothing like the canal traffic nowadays. We only sold our last boat 3 years ago after mostly cruising the rivers and middle level waterways.Much quieter.

    Hi guys. Rick and Sue from SW Florida, US. We love All of your videos and watch regularly. I think you could make great cinematography even better by improving your audio, live and over dubs. River Trent audio barely audible over engine noise. On other videos Caroline’s audio very high pitched lacking a warm normal sounding voice. We love you guys and often wish we were onboard. Cheers from Florida 😅

      Thanks Rick and Sue, good to hear that you're enjoying the videos! Hopefully you will have noticed that our audio has improved somewhat over the 2 years we have been vlogging. This video was in the more early days. It's been a very steep learning curve, and being only amateurs without expensive professional equipment it's the audio that is the hardest thing to manage, especially with the slightest bit of wind and engine noise. We have recently bought lapel microphones and trying to get to grips with using them, and have an external microphone with a wind muff for my phone, but when I am on and off the boat and around locks its hard to keep the microphone on and slip my phone into my pocket when I need to. There's no perfect solution really without investing in expensive equipment, that may soften the sound of my natural voice, but like I said, we are just amateurs using an iPhone to film our travels 😊

      What a wonderful experience Ruth! We have only seen videos of the Falkirk Wheel, and wish that the Scottish and English canals network were connected so we could make that trip easily. My first (and only narrowboat experience before buying one!) trip was at Stoke Bruerne on the Grand Union Canal, on the trip boat Charlie, that took you up to the mouth of Blisworth Tunnel and back again! 😊

    We hired boats from Clifton Cruisers in 1986 and 1992, our 2nd and 7th cruises; nice to see they are still in business. And on Sept. 24, 1986, we moored almost exactly where you did at Barley Mow and Bridge 50! Enjoying your videos.

      Lovely to hear you're enjoying the videos! We always love you sharing the details of your travels on the same stretches so long ago, with your meticulous journalling! We both lived in Rugby at different times before we met each other, and there is a roundabout with a Clifton Cruisers narrowboat in the middle of it to advertise the company, and we never thought that one day we would be living that life, after passing that roundabout so many times! 😊

    I've seen the carved writing in other vlogs but no one explained it as well as you did. I thought maybe they were random but instead they are altogether a poem. Alex read it beautifully. When anyone gets near Rugby I always hope they make it to Rugby Boats. I watch their sale videos sometimes and I love seeing Bumble! He's a great representative for the operation. ❤

      Hi Dorothy! I was so happy to find that poem with a good explanation of how the Locklines came to be. I told Alex we should be using his voiceover services more often as he has a much better soothing tone than me! Rugby Boats is not actually in Rugby, which surprised me when we finally passed it. It’s in Nether Heyford on the Grand Union Canal and I do have some footage of us passing it somewhere. Sadly Bumble was nowhere to be seen. He’s the star of the show for us! We binge watched the boat tours on Rugby Boats when we were planning this new life 😊

    My first acquaintance with the UK canal system was while studying Modern History for the Higher School Certificate (Sydney, Australia). One of the topics was the reasons for UK becoming the first industrialised nation in the world - the canal system, of course! We are “boaties”, sailing and cruising on Sydney Harbour, but I enjoy watching you cruising the canal system. Next time we are in the UK we might hire a narrow boat and try our luck! Keep boating! 🇦🇺

    • @onedaymoreaboard
      @onedaymoreaboard День тому

      That's interesting that you learnt about the British industrial revolution in your history lessons in Australia Carolyn! It was actually one of my favourite periods to study, and I look back and think how on earth am I now living on these historic waterways that we learnt so much about, and were such a key part of British history. You really should hire a narrowboat and see what a wonderful slow paced life it is. I'm not sure if you watch Fran and Rich on UA-cam channel Floating Our Boat, but they had a wonderful experience welcoming round the world solo sailor Dee Caffari on board their narrowboat for a couple of days to experience the slower pace. Take a look at the video here, it's just fabulous! ua-cam.com/video/3TL8EKWihU8/v-deo.htmlsi=VyG-tEW1SVzXXv1d 😊

      You have hit the nail on the head Jill, and we often stay it's what we love the most, and was most surprising about this new life! You make friends, and end up sharing drinks on the towpath or a local pub with people you have sometimes only just moored up with, and have so many connections that it cements the relationship. You may be close to each other geographically for a few days, weeks or sometimes even months, especially over winter, and then part and go your separate ways, and not be close again for two years! It's wonderful when you are not even sure where friends actually are and then you come across them quite by surprise, or see a Facebook post that they are near by, so you can just up and move! 😊

    Hi Caroline, I have a Q for you: In German we have two handy words for slow and fast motion (as when you speeded up the footage of you opening the sluices at a lock) "Zeitlupe" (slow-) and "Zeitraffer" (fast-, as here), but "fast motion" doesn't sound right to me. What do you call it? Plus at 16:25 when you passed Russell & Helen - Poppy barks a polite "Hello" over to Helen, that dog is such an utter delight.

      Hello! Another thought provoking question or comment from you, thank you, we love them! My first thought was the phrase you are looking for is 'sped up'. That's what I say in my head at those points in the video, and I speed them up so they don't drag on and make the video way too long. Anyway, Professor Google tells me that in cinematography, the opposite of slow motion is indeed fast motion! So you were right! I actually studied German at school for 4 years, yet the only phrases that seem to be stuck in my head are 'Welche Farbe sind die Vorhänge?' and 'Wann beginnt die Vorstellung?'. Not that helpful really! Poppy is definitely a social butterfly, especially when she sees people she recognises! We call her our greeter on the boat, as she sits up the back welcoming everyone as they pass! 😊

    • @onedaymoreaboard
      @onedaymoreaboard День тому

      I have been tinkling that we should do a stand alone video explaining travelling with a car and a boat as it's a question we are often asked, and one that we wondered about when planning this new life aboard. Often, we move the boat and then go back and collect the car, either walking (if it's not too far) by bike (we have a folding bike on the boat) or by bus or train. Sometimes, if we have looked ahead and found close by parking, we will move the car ahead, but only if we know almost exactly where we will be mooring, as that's sometimes a bit of an uncertainty. The easiest way is when we have visitors and they offer to take us back to our car. We always take them up own that offer. Also, it is much easier when you are travelling with friends who also have a vehicle. I'm not sure if you were watching us when we spent a few months traveling with Paul and Anthony from UA-cam channel Narrowboat Life Unlocked, but we would drive each other back and ahead to move one of the vehicles. Still a lot of planning, but much easier. We use google maps to zoom in on areas close to the canal and can see where there are lay-bys, often by canal bridges, to park the car. It's a little harder when we are moving through towns and cities, but we find cheap pay and display car parks. It's an incovenience, but it's worth it for the convenience, and it's still a necessity for us having easy access to a car for Pete's job and to get to family easily wherever we are. Hope this helps!

      From my research, the first rugby balls were made of an inflated pig's bladder, encased in leather, so took on the shape of that, which was more of a plum shape. The shape has gradually flattened and elongated over the years as it has evolved, as it is an easier shape to run with. I learnt something new today too, thank you! 😊

    How charming and poetic that someone took the time to carve those lock gates! Alex read them beautifully. I'm in Southern California and currently experiencing temperatures around 100˚-110˚F so I can't believe Pete is wearing layers of cold weather gear in August! And the muddy paths suggest the need for Wellies as well. That makes me wonder how much and how many types of clothing you have to keep in limited onboard storage facilities. Do you store seasonal things on shore somehow? How many changes of daily wear do you keep onboard? Do you have to go on shore for laundering? There must be a lot of planning required. Seems narrow boating has a variety of ways to make your life a judicious and thoughtful one. Good to know Poppy enjoys narrowboat videos as much as I do. ; >

      Hi Rainey! Ugh those are the sort of temperatures we don't miss from from our time in Texas, when everyone was wishing for a few days of high 80s at least! This was actually filmed in May, and it has warmed up a little since then, and the tow paths have dried out a little. We've had so much more rain than usual this year, and its been far colder for much longer, but summer seems to have arrived finally! We have storage totes under the bed, where we rotate our seasonal clothes, and we keep our bulky winter coats under the seat of the dinette. It's surprising how much storage we have on board really, and we make the most of it! We have a small 4KG washing machine on board, and a drying rack to hang things to dry, but when we need to do bulky items like bedding and towels we find a launderette/washateria. I do take advantage of taking over laundry to use my mum's washing machine when I visit though! You're right, there is quite a bit of planning involved, only washing when we know we are heading to a water point to fill up, but it's all part of this wonderful adventure! 😊
